County Chair Will Longmire and former Eden Valley YFC Chair Will Rogerson were invited alongside Steven Harris from The Cornwall Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs to form an England team to take part in the 5 Nations Stock Judging competition, which took place at The Royal Highland Show, Ingliston near Edinburgh on Saturday 24th June 2023 and kindly hosted by the Scottish Association of Young Farmers Clubs. The England team competed against YFC teams from Scotland, Wales and Ulster.
Some of the breeds of cattle that the competitors had to judge were Holsteins and Ayrshire for the dairy, Highland Cattle and Aberdeen Angus for beef. While the sheep breeds judged included South Country Cheviots and Border Leicesters. Competitors judged 10 classes in each category.
After a very long and hot day, the results were finally in, which saw Will Rogerson gain first place overall in the beef stock judging with the England team securing 574 points and Will Longmire also gaining first place overall in the sheep stock judging, resulting in the England team securing 533 points as a team. In the dairy category, the team achieved 541 points. These fantastic scores, resulted in the England team securing 2nd place overall with a total of 1,648 points, which was only 2 points behind the first place winners Scotland with 1,650 points. Third place went to Wales with 1,487 and Ulster came 4th with 1,083 points.
This is not the first time that Cumbria YFC has had a member invited to take part in this competition. Amy Bowness from Greysouthen YFC represented England in 2022.
