Over 60 teams comprising of nearly 400 Young Farmers took part in the YFC County Sports, descending en masse on Kirby Stephen Grammar School on Sunday 15th October. The threatened rain held off and the young farmers showed their sporting prowess in a fun filled day.

Skelton YFC showed great skill with the senior A team of; Helen Graham, Tom Peile, Lucy Peile, Laura Elliott, Jamie Dobinson, Simon Graham and Hannah Lilburn winning the mixed 6 a side Hockey. Kent Estuary YFC took 2nd place and Lowick and Egremont YFCs came 3rd and 4th respectively.

Mixed Ultimate Frisbee proved a popular sport, with teams throwing themselves wholeheartedly into the spirit of the game, despite the somewhat blustery conditions! The Lowick YFC team of Alice and Will Longmire, Esther Lambert, Jamie Philipson, Sam Leech and Thomas Woodburn were placed 1st with Pennine YFC placed 2nd, Eden Valley YFC taking 3rd place and Kent Estuary YFC placed 4th.

The junior mixed Dodgeball provided spectators with some nail biting moments, with teams showing great skill and determination throughout the day. Kent Estuary YFC members; Rachel Cornthwaite, James Dickinson, Wilson Park, Ben Handley, Grace Handley, Josh Haddow, James Walmsley won a hard fought first place for Kent Estuary YFC. Skelton YFC C and B teams were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively and Caldbeck YFC came 4th.

The Jump Rope and Disco Dancing competitions proved to be the highlight of the day for many, with our young farmers delivering some truly amazing synchronised routines. Aspatria YFC took 1st place in the dancing, with Wigton YFC and Caldbeck YFC taking 2nd and 3rd place respectively and Drigg YFC coming 4th. Lowick YFC took a very well deserved 1st place in the Jump Rope. Kent Estuary YFC were placed 2nd and Furness YFC were placed 3rd.

Chief Steward, James Park from Crook YFC, kept the day on track and assisted County Chair Christina Coulthard in presenting certificates to the winning teams. Thanks to the following umpires and referees who gave their time so willingly to ensure the day was a great success; Robert Marrs, John Longmire, Dave Norman, Kim Balmer, Kim Lupton, Matthew Burbury, Dan Bargh, Kerry Stevens, Maureen Boyren, Lucy Thomas and Glenys Lumly and to all the stewards who made sure that all the teams were iI the right place at the right time!

The top 3 teams in each sport will now represent Cumbria at the Northern Area Finals hosted by East Riding in February.
