A bright and sunny morning saw members from the 15 Northern District young farmers clubs gather at Hopes Auction, Wigton on Sunday 9th April. The proceedings got off to a lively start with junior, intermediate and senior members donning their white coats and judging 4 butcher’s lambs, 4 dairy cattle, 4 butcher’s beef cattle and 4 breeding sheep. As well as placing the animals, those competing were tasked with giving their reasons to the judges; Richard Graham, John Bushby, Andrew Carter, James Creighton, Steven Stoddart, David Bowman, John Longmire, David Bowe, Ross Pattinson, John Ackley, Philip Elliott, and Neil Marsden. The results of the stock judging were not announced on the day, as these results will be added to the scores on the field day.

After a well- earned lunch break, where a huge quantity of pie and chips were consumed, weigh in having been in the morning, the afternoon’s Tug of War proceedings commenced. Judges; Clare Johnson, Judith Emmott and Derek Wilson took to the field with the mixed juniors competing first off, with the youngest members of clubs showing some real promise and giving their all. Next up was the ladies competition, with those taking part showing a great deal of skill and determination.

Finally, as the afternoon drew to a close, the men’s competition got under way. This clash of the Titans saw old adversaries competing against each other and held those gathered to watch enthralled and on tenter hooks until the very end.

As the results were read out by Chief Steward, Craig Brough, teams and spectators alike agreed it had been a very good afternoon of sport.

The results were as follows;
