Junior Public Speaking and YFC Member of the Year County Final Competitions

Cumbria YFC’s County Finals of the Junior Public Speaking and YFC Member of the Year competitions were held at the George Hotel, Penrith on Thursday 26th January.

Junior Public Speaking judges Mr John Geldard and Mrs Alison Wilson listened with great interest to young farmers aged 16 and under speaking on a whole host of fascinating and enlightening topics, which included; My hobby – running, Musical Instruments, Some like it hot (a trip to Borneo), My best holiday and My pets. The judges thoroughly enjoyed their night of judging and commented on how inspiring the talks that the younger members of Cumbria YFC had given, with those taking part obviously having spent much time and effort in practising and perfecting their talks.

The Lowick YFC B team of Charlotte Mallett, Leah Clough and Luke Hodgson took a very well deserved first place. Emilia Burbury, Ella Swainson and Emma Hetherington of Raughton Head YFC came a close second and the Drigg YFC B team of Emily Pratt, Rosie Pratt and Billy Sibbald came a respectable third.

Nine Young Farmers from around the county were interviewed by retired County President Mr Stephen Brough, retired District Presidents, Mrs Helen Pickup (Northern District) and Mrs Carol Barker (Southern District)  for the honour of being named Cumbria’s YFC Member of the Year.

The judges were impressed with the quality of all the interviewees and their CVs, and it was a closely fought competition with Henry Knowles of Grayrigg YFC taking first place, Paul Barrow of Eden Valley YFC placed second and Alice Longmire of Lowick YFC taking third place.

The top 3 competitors and teams from both competitions will now go on to compete at the Northern Area Weekend hosted by Yorkshire YFC on the 25th and 26th February.
