Hundreds of Young Farmers and their supporters enjoyed a fantastic day of sunshine and fun on Saturday 23rd May, as they competed in the Southern District Annual Field Day, which was held at Docker Hall by kind permission of the Packham Family.

With over 60 competitions on the day there was something for everyone including the Farm Labour Saving Device, won by Bill Whitaker of Cartmel YFC, Vintage Tractor Handling won by Mike Stainton and Tracy Hodgson of Sedbergh YFC, A Selection of Savoury Biscuits in a Homemade Box, won by Emma Metcalf of Eden Valley YFC,  and the Lakeland Dialect competition won by Richard Carruthers, Crook YFC for his composition entitled “Oor Fwolk””.

The Tug-of-war competition was fiercely fought,  with Sedbergh YFC winning both the men’s and ladies’s competitions. Broughton  YFC gave a fantastic effort and won the junior competition.

The 18 Pre-Field Day classes were won overall by Grayrigg YFC with Pennine and Sedbergh YFCs coming joint second. Machine Sheep Shearing, Open and Intermediate competitions were won by Ben Cresswell (Furness YFC) and Phil Edmondson (Lowick YFC) respectively. The Open Hand Sheep Shearing was won by Tom Redmayne of Crook YFC, and the Intermediate competition was won by William Atkinson of Grayrigg YFC.

Tom Bland , Field Day Chairman thanked Amy Harrison, Field Day Secretary for all her hard work and support. He also went on to thank the many judges and stewards who had helped make the day such a success.

He then announced the Final results as follows:-

Host team Grayrigg raised the roof when it was announced that they had won the Cock of the North Trophy with 9664 points, Kent Estuary were placed 2nd with 9591 points, 3rd Lowick 9179 points and 4th Sedbergh 8718 points.
