Cumbria YFC’s County Finals of the Public Speaking (16 and under) and Situations Vacant competitions were held at the George Hotel, Penrith on Monday 16th February.

Public Speaking judges Frank Gate and Stephen Rowlinson heard 6 very competent speakers talking on topics which included; sheep dog trials, Leicester sheep, the Gosforth Show, the Scout movement and volunteering.  The judges remarked that all of the teams had extremely capable chairmen and proposers of the vote of thanks and that the final marking was very close indeed.

Wigton’s team of Ellie Skelhorn, Molly Gilroy and Ellie McCracken were placed a well deserved first.   Second were Molly Simcock, Ellie Naylor and Hollie Simcock from Drigg YFC and third were Lowick’s team of Ben Cooper, Emma Cooper and Robert Rowlinson.

The Situations Vacant Competition saw 6 young people interviewed for a variety of jobs by judges Pat Bell and Claire Willett. The judges commended all the contestants on their CV’s and personal statements and Pat said that all their interviews had been excellent, making the competition extremely hard to judge.

Emma Blaylock from Brampton YFC was placed first with Alice Longmire, Lowick YFC 2nd and Laura Mason, Kent Estuary 3rd.
